The task consists to design a POP UP KIOSK for the "Nottingham Loves" Festival. The starting location is the Old Market Square, in the city centre but needs to be designed as a transportable kiosk. I can decide what the kiosk should sell and I have also to design the cafè within these dimension parameters (H2,2m xW2,5m xL3,5); the forniture must be stored inside the café when closed; seatings for a minimum of 8 customers and obviously the kiosk should be transportable.
So in this last week I have started my research for the design of the kiosk. I've been in the Old Market square to take some picture and in the meantime to think about where I could locate my kiosk.
The first thing that I noticed is the huge space that this square contains. So my first question is where should I put my kiosk? What place could give it a sense and a different quality? What can make the difference, considering that in a festival there are a lot of kiosks and stands selling different things? Visiting other events in this square I've also noticed that due to the confusion of different stands placed together, it's hard to recognize again the fascination of this square. So my kiosk has to be located on the base of a reasoning, linked to this place first. For this reason I started to study the map of the location, thinking about the big and important building around the square, like the Nottingham Council House. What is the main architecture style? What are the main colours? Where people prefer to cross? What are the main routes of people? And why?
In this drawing I tried also to mark the barriers like the green barriers on the top or the low walls used like seatings, with red arrows I marked the main entrances. Looking at the seatings near the fountain I started to think about a connection between the kiosk and the square. Why shouldn't they be part of my project?
Customers could sit there waiting for a friend who is ordering a café...
So I could put my kiosk on the other side, to use also the space created by plants and have like a semi-private space.
Looking at the plan I have also to consider the different inclinations of the paviments and the different walkways, because if I locate my kiosk near or above these walkways I have also to think about the gaps and how the kiosk could be opened.
Then, obviously I have to think about the shape and volume of my kiosk and what it should sell because the electronic systems within the kiosk depend on what it should be prepare and cook. And so I have to verify that everything I need in the kiosk is placed in the right way, may be deviding the service zone from the taples zone?
